rocket image Making Sense of Observability Costs
CostLens is our resource for guiding you through the sometimes confusing world of observability system costs. The resource consists of three principal components:
  • A guide to observability costs
  • Vendor specific guidance
  • Our unique cost estimation tool
To get the best out of the cost estimation tool we would strongly recommend that you read our guide.

Observability systems vary widely not only in pricing and billing methods but also in terms of features. These estimates can be helpful in gaining a ballpark figure but they really need to be looked at in context to have real meaning.

However, if you just want to get stuck in straight away, then you can follow the Quick Start below.

You want to cut straight to the chase - no problem:

  1. Enter your core options for log, trace and metrics ingestion and then click on the Set Options button. The values will then be copied to any system that you can select. Once you select a system you can then enter custom values for that system without affecting the defaults.
  2. Select up to three systems whose costs you want to review. Enter relevant values for settings such as logs, metrics, traces etc.
  3. Click on the Estimate Costs button.

That's it!

Metric Measure Types
Some systems - e.g. Observe and SigNoz measure metrics in terms of the total number of samples or points ingested. Other, such as Grafana, measure according to Active Time Series (per minute). You can choose either and we will do the conversion for you.

If you use the the Time Series measure then you must also take frequency into account. If you have 10k time series and they are being scraped every 15 seconds then you effectively have 40k per minute, so that is the value you should enter. Conversely, if you have 10k series and they are only being sampled once every two minutes then you effectively have 5k active time series per minute.
